Vaulting

Equestrian Vaulting can be described as gymnastics on the back of a moving horse being worked on a circle under the control of a lunger. It incorporates beauty and brilliance, power and strength, elegance and precision all in harmony with the horse.

More info...

Vaulting develops:

  • General fitness
  • Coordination
  • Team work and trust
  • Leadership skills
  • Creativity
  • Musical expression
  • Balance
  • Core strength
  • Flexibility
  • Upper body strength
  • Discipline and safety awareness
  • Confidence
  • Listening and communication skills

It is not necessary to have any riding skills to learn to vault, although vaulting helps to develop an excellent riding seat. Vaulting is a popular sport amongst able-bodied and disabled people.

The horse is controlled by a lunger and moves in a 15-metre circle advanced vaulters and competitive teams perform most exercises canter, but for those just starting and wanting to have fun at clubs the vaulting manoeuvres are done at walk. Vaulting is a year-round sport, using equestrian surfaced arenas for working on the horse, alongside the use of a barrel as a ‘practice horse’. Vaulting is Male and female sport and can be done by all ages.

Vaulting horses wear a bridle with side reins, surcingle and a thick back pad. The surcingle has special handles and leather loops which aid the vaulter in performing certain moves. The horse is trained to be lunged and remain moving on the circle taking commands from the lunger only so that the vaulters can concentrate on performing the gymnastic movements. The vaulters wear clothing very similar to those worn by gymnasts with the addition of special soft shoes to allow ease and safety of movement. Vaulters do not wear helmets like traditional horse riders as this would inhibit their ability to safely perform movements.

For our club level vaulting members should wear non snag stretchy clothing and soft trainers to begin with. All our activities are carried out in walk and practice on a barrel horse beforehand. If you would like to learn more about vaulting as a sport please visit the following links. http://britishvaulting.org/ https://www.fei.org/stories/getting-started-vaulting
